The Deep Bond Between Humans and Animals at End of Life

Energy healing and animal communication can be very supportive at end of life, both for the family and for the pet who is nearing the end of their journey.

One of the most common questions I am asked to ask animals is whether they are ready to pass, and whether they have any preferences about how they would like their end-of-life experience to unfold. On all but a very few occasions, the response has been, “I am ready, but they aren’t” (meaning the family), followed by a sense that they cannot leave until their family is ready.

What I have taken from this is that families often need time to come to terms with the impending loss before asking the question. Imagine having the ability to give an animal what they truly need at end of life, but struggling to do so because of the grief associated with saying goodbye.

One experience has stayed with me. After hearing many animals say, “I am ready, but my family is not,” the first animal who simply answered “Yes, I am ready” was a very old, very large dog who could no longer use her back legs. Her owner, a small woman who lived alone, was carrying her beloved old girl up and down the steps from the back balcony each day so she could toilet.

I found myself wondering whether this dog did not add, “I cannot go until my family is ready,” because she understood that her mum could not continue carrying her indefinitely. An accident was becoming increasingly likely, and could have been disastrous for both of them.

It is also important to remember that our animals are part of our family. When a family is grieving the loss of a beloved pet, the remaining animals are grieving too.

In a recent communication with an older dog, K, who was unwell, I could feel a deep sadness. When I asked whether she was sad, she immediately showed me the other dog in the family who had been euthanised a month earlier. My first impression was that the dog looked deceased, but I assumed she was simply asleep. Later, I learned that K had accompanied her family to the veterinary clinic and had been present during the procedure.

I provided Scalar Wave Healing and Reiki for K over three days, and afterwards she appeared much more relaxed and more like her old self.

If you have a dog or other companion animal approaching the end of life, remember that support can be offered not only for their physical comfort, but also for their emotional wellbeing — and for the wellbeing of the family members who are walking this difficult path with them. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is a peaceful space in which both humans and animals can be heard, supported, and gently prepared for what comes next.
