Ceremonies

A ceremony to support you through pet loss is a formal, or informal structured event designed to help individuals and communities process and express emotions related to loss and bereavement. Unlike rituals, a ceremony is usually held once, or on an anniversary.

Create a ceremonial atmosphere – You may want to conduct this ceremony in a place that was special to the animal. Use candles, light, or incense to create a sense of sacred space. You could begin with a song or moment of silence.

Have Items that Belonged to Your Pet – A collar, leash, a toy, blanket, or bedding may serve to remind you of the animal’s physical presence (and even scent). (This can be painful for some, so use your judgment about how, when, and where to introduce this

Share Memories of Your Companion – Invite others to share stories of your companion. They can be funny – animals give light and laughter in our lives, even when they are gone. Sharing the story of the animal’s dying may be an important part of this, especially if you have a sense the animal knew when to let go of its earthly body.

Read Poems or Prayers – There are literally hundreds of poems, creative prayers, and remembrances for loss of a pet, and many can be found on the Internet.

Sing a Song – Music can be healing in times of sorrow and joy. Pick a song that is meaningful to you or to your animal, and sing it, play it on an instrument, or on an album. This can be a good way to open or close the ceremony.

Memorial Ceremony – Gather with friends and family to share memories, stories and photos of your dog. You could  light candles, sing, or release something into water or the wind — like flower petals or birdseed.

Gratitude Ceremony – Invite everyone to speak aloud or write down all the things that make them grateful to your pet. Let them hear your love. Share memories, say thank you, and express your love and permission for them to go if they’re ready.
